Dental implants are designed to provide a stable, long-term replacement for missing teeth. So, if an implant suddenly feels loose, it’s understandable to feel concerned. A loose-feeling implant isn’t something you should ignore, but it also doesn’t necessarily mean the entire implant has failed.
The important thing is to determine what is actually moving and have it evaluated by your dentist as soon as possible.
Why Might a Dental Implant Feel Loose?
A dental implant has several components, including the implant post, abutment, and dental crown. What feels like a loose implant may actually be a loose crown or another component rather than the implant post itself.
If the implant post has become loose, however, there may be a problem with the connection between the implant and the surrounding bone. Dental implants rely on the surrounding bone to hold them securely in place. In some cases, an implant may not properly integrate with the surrounding bone during healing.
Another possible cause is peri-implantitis, an inflammatory condition affecting the tissues around an implant. Bacteria and plaque buildup can contribute to inflammation and bone loss around the implant, potentially affecting its stability.
Excessive pressure can also play a role. Habits such as teeth grinding or clenching may place additional forces on an implant and its components over time.
What Should I Do If My Implant Is Loose?
If your dental implant feels loose, contact your dentist promptly. Don’t try to tighten, adjust, or remove anything yourself. Attempting to fix the implant at home could cause additional damage or make the problem more difficult to treat.
Until you can be examined, be gentle with the area. Avoid chewing hard or sticky foods around the affected implant, and continue maintaining good oral hygiene without aggressively brushing the area.
Your dentist will examine the implant and surrounding tissues to determine what is causing the movement. They may also take dental X-rays or other images to evaluate the implant and supporting bone.
Can a Loose Implant Be Fixed?
Treatment depends on what is causing the problem. If only the crown or another component is loose, your dentist may be able to repair or replace that component without removing the implant itself.
If the implant post has lost stability because of infection, bone loss, or failure to properly integrate with the surrounding bone, more extensive treatment may be necessary. In some cases, the implant may need to be removed and replaced after the area has healed and the underlying problem has been addressed.
The sooner you have a loose implant evaluated, the sooner your dentist can determine what is happening and discuss your treatment options.
A loose implant deserves professional attention, even if it isn’t causing pain.
