What Are Inlays & Onlays?
Like dental crowns, inlays and onlays are used to cover damaged or decayed teeth. But while crowns conceal the entire dental structure, inlays and onlays are designed to only cover specific parts of the tooth or teeth in question. An inlay is placed within the cusps of the tooth while onlays cover at least one of the cusps and may even go over the edge of the tooth.
Generally speaking, inlays are likely to be recommended if you have a relatively small cavity. Onlays are often called for if the damage has occurred in a more sizable area.
How Are Inlays & Onlays Placed?
To receive an inlay or onlay, you will typically need to schedule at least two appointments at our office. The first visit will involve repairing your tooth by removing any decayed areas and/or reshaping the parts that have been damaged. An impression will be taken to help design the final restoration. Meanwhile, a temporary restoration will be attached to your tooth as a precaution.
When the final inlay or onlay is ready, we can schedule your second appointment. We’ll take the temporary restoration off your tooth so that it can be replaced with the permanent one.
