You’ve heard the stories: root canals are “the worst,” driven upon us by harsh dentists who just want to make us unhappy. This is, to say the least, a gross misunderstanding. In reality, root canals are a process designed to rescue teeth from imminent danger.
But why would you need it, exactly?
It is likely that the answer is tooth decay. The decay from one of your teeth removes some of the enamel and causes a cavity, which creates an opportunity for bacteria to find its way into the pulp on the innermost layer of your teeth, infecting its lifeblood.
Another less common answer is that you cracked your tooth in an accident. It is possible for a tooth to be cracked at a microscopic level, which leaves the root vulnerable to harmful bacteria.
Talk to your dentist about dental care options. If you have dental anxiety or are unsure about any aspect of the process, your dentist can comfort you and talk you through the details of the treatment.
