Shielding Teeth from Harm

Posted .

You can shield your teeth from injury and decay through simple practices and common sense. Such care includes wearing safety equipment when needed, eating the proper foods, developing positive oral health habits, and quitting all unhealthy habits that intensify your risk for oral ailments.

Here’s an example of a mishap: using your teeth as bottle-opener. Your teeth are tough, but are sometimes no match for much harder materials in our world like bottle caps.

Some oral health risks come in small packages–tiny grains of sugar, for example. Sugar can create tooth loss. If bacteria begin to build in your mouth, they will turn into plaque. Plaque feeds on sugar, converting it into harmful acids that corrode tooth enamel and exposing smiles to cavities and other forms of tooth decay.

Remember to uphold good oral health habits of brushing for two minutes twice a day and flossing once a day. These simple techniques will give your smile a fighting chance.

Not all oral health risks come from external sources. If you have bruxism, your teeth are at an amplified risk. If left unchecked, teeth grinding can weaken your tooth enamel and even cause chips and cracks to occur. Check with your dentist if you suspect bruxism or other dental health problems.
