Now that your dental veneers have been placed, you can begin enjoying all of the benefits of a bright, white, beautiful smile. Veneers are sturdy and stain resistant, but remember that they are not designed to last forever. The good news is that with the proper care, veneers can keep your smile shining for 10-15 years.

But in order for that to happen, you need to make sure that you take proper care of them. The most important thing that you can do for your veneers is to brush at least twice a day, floss before bed, and see your dentist for your regular cleanings and exams. Your veneers need to be protected, and you can do that by wearing the right equipment to protect your mouth while working, playing sports or recreating. If you grind your teeth at night, or clench them, a condition known as bruxism you can damage your veneers. Talk to your dentist about bruxism to see if you need a night guard, or another treatment.

If you use your teeth to open packages, or you chew on pens or other objects, you increase the risk of damaging your veneers.

Coffee, red wine and tobacco can stain your veneers, and while teeth whitening systems will not work to restore their color, the dentist can clean your veneers during your next office visit.

Over time, your veneers may chip or crack or the bonding material may wear out, causing the veneer to fall off. In those cases, schedule an appointment with your dentist to have the problem fixed or the veneer replaced.
