I Knocked Out a Tooth and I’m Away From Home. What Do I Do?

Posted .

If you’re on a trip and you experience a dental emergency involving a knocked-out tooth, our dental team is sorry to hear that! Dental emergencies can be quite troubling. However, there is no need to panic. There are things you can do to improve the situation, and our dentist, Dr. Jose-Luis Ruiz, is happy to tell you all about them.

The first thing you should do is contact a local dental office. Tell them about the situation and schedule an emergency appointment. If possible, sort out the details before you get to the office. You don’t want to be waiting in the living room filling out paperwork with a knocked-out tooth.

The second thing you should do is pick up the tooth by the crown. This is the part of the tooth that was visible when it was still in place. Then, if it’s dirty, rinse it with water. Whatever you do, do not scrub the tooth, especially the roots.

The third thing you should do is try to put the tooth back into place. If this isn’t possible, put the tooth in a tooth-preservation kit, in a glass of milk, or between your gums and cheek. If you choose the latter option, make sure not to swallow the tooth!

If you have any questions about how to take care of a knocked-out tooth when you’re away from Studio City, California, please call Dr. Jose-Luis Ruiz at (818) 755-2920. Our dental team is more than happy to hear from and help you!
